I Didn’t Even Know This Was a Thing, But Every Driver Should Know About It

Many drivers have noticed the button showing a car with wavy skid marks underneath but have never been completely sure what it does. Some assume it should always remain turned off, while others never touch it at all. After learning its real purpose, many are surprised to discover that it plays an important role in vehicle safety.

The button controls the vehicle’s traction control or electronic stability control system, depending on the model. These systems are designed to help the driver maintain control when the tires begin to lose grip on slippery roads, during sudden maneuvers, or while accelerating on wet, icy, or loose surfaces.

Under normal driving conditions, safety experts recommend leaving the system turned on because it can automatically reduce engine power or apply braking to individual wheels when it detects a loss of traction. This helps the vehicle remain stable and can reduce the risk of skidding in challenging conditions.

There are situations where temporarily switching the system off can be helpful, such as when a vehicle becomes stuck in deep snow, mud, or sand and needs extra wheel spin to regain momentum. Once the vehicle is free, however, the system should generally be turned back on before continuing to drive.

Although it may seem like just another button on the dashboard, this feature was designed to improve vehicle stability and help drivers stay in control when road conditions become difficult. Understanding when to leave it on—and the few situations where turning it off may be useful—can make every journey safer.
