How Often Should You Really Wash Your Bed Sheets?

Bed sheets are something most people use every single night, yet they are often one of the most overlooked items when it comes to regular cleaning. Over time, they collect sweat, body oils, dead skin cells, dust, and other everyday buildup. While everyone’s routine is different, many people wonder how often is actually considered a good habit.

Sleep experts generally recommend washing bed sheets about once a week for most people. If someone sweats heavily during the night, sleeps with pets, has allergies, or is recovering from an illness, washing them every three to four days may be a better choice. Regular cleaning helps reduce allergens, odors, and the accumulation of bacteria and dust mites.

For some households, stretching the time between washes to two or even three weeks may happen because of busy schedules or personal preference. While this isn’t necessarily dangerous for everyone, the longer sheets go without being washed, the more sweat, skin cells, and other particles can build up, making the bedding less hygienic and potentially affecting sleep comfort.

Keeping pillows, pillowcases, blankets, and mattress protectors clean is just as important. Pillowcases often benefit from more frequent washing since they come into direct contact with the face and hair, while blankets and comforters can usually be cleaned less often according to their care instructions.

Ultimately, there isn’t a single rule that fits every household, but washing bed sheets weekly is widely considered a healthy routine for most people. Maintaining clean bedding can improve comfort, reduce allergens, and create a fresher sleeping environment throughout the year.
