The 9/11 Commercial That Only Ever Aired Once

The commercial begins quietly, without dialogue or dramatic narration. The famous Budweiser Clydesdales travel across the countryside before eventually approaching New York City. As the Manhattan skyline comes into view, the absence of the Twin Towers immediately gives the scene an emotional weight that needs no explanation.

The horses continue their journey until they reach a snowy field overlooking the city. Standing together in formation, they face the skyline in complete silence. Then comes the unforgettable moment: the Clydesdales slowly lower themselves and bow their heads toward New York, creating a simple but powerful tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Budweiser created the advertisement as a tribute following the attacks, and it was broadcast nationally only once during Super Bowl XXXVI on February 3, 2002. Rather than using the tragedy to promote a product aggressively, the commercial relied on recognizable imagery, silence, and the solemn movement of the horses to deliver its message.

The company reportedly received special permission to film in locations necessary to capture the New York skyline and other scenes. The finished commercial contained almost no conventional advertising language. Its final message was simply one of remembrance and respect, allowing the imagery of the Clydesdales’ bow to carry the emotional meaning.

More than two decades later, the commercial remains one of the most memorable tributes associated with 9/11. Its power comes from what it doesn’t say: there are no speeches and no complicated explanations. Just the horses, the changed skyline, and one silent bow honoring a day America promised never to forget.
