Why Men’s and Women’s Buttons Are Different

Most people put on a shirt every day without ever noticing a small detail that has existed for centuries. On most men’s shirts, the buttons are sewn on the right side, while on most women’s shirts, they are placed on the left. It may seem random, but the difference actually has roots in history.

One popular explanation dates back to a time when wealthy women were often dressed by servants. Since most people are right-handed, placing the buttons on the opposite side made it easier for a servant standing across from the wearer to fasten the garment quickly and efficiently.

Men’s clothing developed differently. Historically, men were expected to dress themselves, and many carried weapons such as swords. Having buttons on the right side made it easier for a right-handed man to access his clothing and equipment without interference.

As fashion evolved, the original practical reasons became less important, but manufacturers continued following the tradition. Over time, the button placement became a standard feature that distinguished men’s and women’s clothing even though most people no longer needed servants or carried swords.

Today, the difference remains largely because of tradition rather than necessity. What started as a practical design choice centuries ago has survived into modern fashion, making it one of the most interesting details hidden in everyday clothing.
